Scholarships for Uzbek students fall into four groups: host-government awards (Chevening, Fulbright, GKS, DAAD, Türkiye Scholarships, Stipendium Hungaricum), Uzbek state funding (El-Yurt Umidi Foundation), multi-country programmes (Erasmus Mundus) and university scholarships. Each has its own eligibility rules and calendar, and the only reliable source is the programme's official page, linked below. The strongest applications share one thing: a clear, specific story of what you will study and what you will do with it.
Every rule quoted on this page was checked on the official site on 1 October 2026. Rules change each cycle, so open the link before you plan.

What each programme is looking for
Chevening looks for future leaders with work experience and a plan for their home country. The essays ask about leadership, networking, your study plan and career plan. An Uzbek-language walkthrough of the essays and interview is in Chevening granti qo‘llanmasi.
Fulbright funds master's study in the US. It suits graduates with some professional experience and a clear academic goal. Read the embassy's FAQ for this cycle's priority fields and test requirements.
GKS is one of the few big programmes that funds bachelor's degrees. The year of Korean is a real commitment: after it, many programmes are taught in Korean. More in Koreya GKS granti (in Uzbek).
DAAD is a family of programmes rather than one scholarship. Use the database filters (your country, your field, your level) and read each entry's eligibility carefully; some programmes are for specific fields or for people already working in development-related areas.
Türkiye Scholarships and Stipendium Hungaricum cover a wide range of subjects and levels. For Stipendium Hungaricum, you apply online and also need to follow the nomination procedure of the sending partner in Uzbekistan; the country page explains how.
Erasmus Mundus is a joint master's in which you study in at least two European countries. Each programme has its own deadline, documents and selection, so you apply to the programme, not to a central office.
El-Yurt Umidi is Uzbekistan's own route. Competitions, quotas and conditions (including any obligations after graduation) are announced on the foundation's official site; read the full announcement for the round you apply to.
A realistic application strategy
- Shortlist three to five programmes, not fifteen. Each strong application takes 20–40 hours.
- Build one calendar. For each programme: deadline, documents, English requirement, references, interview period.
- Write one core story, then adapt it: the problem you care about, what you have already done about it, what you need to learn, what you will do afterwards.
- Ask referees early, at least six weeks ahead, and give them your CV and a short note on what you'd like them to mention.
- Book the English test early so you can retake it; see study abroad from Uzbekistan for the full timeline.
- Prepare for the interview in English, out loud, with follow-up questions.

Essay sentences: weak and strong
Most essays fail on vagueness, not grammar. Compare:
| Weak | Strong |
|---|---|
| I have always been passionate about education. | For three years I taught English in a rural school in Surxondaryo, where 30 students shared eight textbooks. |
| I want to contribute to the development of my country. | After my master's, I plan to join the Ministry of Preschool and School Education to design teacher training for rural districts. |
| I am a hard-working and responsible person. | I set up a weekend reading club that grew from 6 to 40 students in one term. |
| The UK has the best universities in the world. | The MA in Education Policy at [university] includes a module on assessment reform, which is exactly the gap I saw in my school. |
| I will use my knowledge in the future. | Within two years of returning, I aim to pilot the training in two districts and measure reading results. |
Rules: one claim, one proof; numbers where you honestly have them; name the course, the module, the job. Motivation letter templates in Uzbek are in universitetga motivatsion xat.
Scholarship myths we hear in Uzbekistan
- "You need perfect grades." Grades matter, but for programmes like Chevening, work experience and a credible plan weigh heavily. Read the selection criteria and write to them.
- "You need connections." The big programmes select through published criteria and panels. Paying someone "to help you win" is a warning sign.
- "Apply everywhere, one will work." Ten generic applications lose to three specific ones.
- "English can wait until after I'm selected." Many programmes need a test result or a conditional offer early. Plan the test first.
- "Fully funded means zero costs." Even full awards may leave some costs, such as the test, translations or the first weeks before the stipend arrives. Read what is covered.
Practice task: which programme fits?
Suggest one or two suitable programmes from the table for each person.
- 1. Dilnoza, 17, finishing school in Andijan, good at maths, open to learning a new language.
- 2. Sardor, 27, civil engineer, four years at a construction company, wants a one-year master's in the UK and plans to return.
- 3. Kamola, 23, just graduated in economics, wants a master's taught in English in two or three European countries.
- 4. Aziz, 29, researcher at a Tashkent institute, wants a PhD in Germany.
- 5. Nodira, 24, wants a master's in the US and has two years of teaching experience.
- 6. Bekzod, 22, wants to study abroad with funding from Uzbekistan's own programme.
Answers
- GKS (undergraduate track, with a year of Korean) or Türkiye Scholarships / Stipendium Hungaricum, which also fund bachelor's degrees.
- Chevening: he meets the work-experience condition and plans to return for at least two years.
- Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters: study in at least two European countries; also check Stipendium Hungaricum for a single-country option.
- DAAD: search the database for doctoral and research programmes in his field.
- Fulbright Foreign Student Program: check the embassy page for current eligibility and priority fields.
- El-Yurt Umidi Foundation: follow the competitions announced on eyuf.uz.
Practising the scholarship interview
Most selection interviews are in English and include follow-up questions you can't script, such as "Why not study this in Uzbekistan?" In BandMate you can role-play an interview with Bandi by voice, practise answering follow-ups without long pauses and get feedback on grammar and pronunciation. It won't judge your eligibility or your essay, but it will help your spoken answers sound as clear as your written ones.
