The bazaar is at its best early in the day, when traders are still arranging piles of dried apricots, walnuts and warm bread. Many of them are happy to let you taste something before you buy, and even a few words of Uzbek will bring a smile. Afterwards, walk into the narrow residential streets nearby. You will see wooden gates, children playing and neighbours chatting outside their houses, which is everyday life that no museum can show.
Why is it worth your time? Monuments tell you about the past, but places like this show you how people live today. It costs nothing, and it gives you stories that most tourists never hear. If you go, wear comfortable shoes and bring some cash in small notes, as many small stalls prefer it.
So next time you visit, put your camera away for an hour and simply explore.
