Personally, I’d choose a big city, at least at this stage of my life. |
The main reason is opportunities… |
For example, my cousin moved to Tashkent last year and… |
Admittedly, rent is expensive. But… |
Is it better to live in a big city or a small town?
I think big city is better. Because there are many jobs. And there are many shops and cafes. Small town is boring. So I like big city.
Personally, I’d choose a big city, at least at this stage of my life. The main reason is opportunities: in Tashkent there are far more jobs, universities and courses than in a small district town, so it’s easier to build a career. For example, my cousin moved from a small town last year and found an IT internship within two months. Admittedly, city life has its downsides, and the traffic and the cost of renting a flat are real problems. But for a young person, I think the opportunities outweigh the stress, although I might feel differently once I have a family.
|---|---|
| Because… алоҳида гап бўлиб турибди | Сабаб гап ичида: so it’s easier to… |
| many jobs, many shops — умумий | far more jobs… than in a small district town — таққослаш |
| Мисол йўқ | Аниқ одам ва муддат: my cousin… within two months |
| Позиция қатъий ва оддий | Шарт билан: at least at this stage of my life |

Tell me about a job you would like to do in the future. What skills does this job require? Why do so many young people in Uzbekistan want to work in IT?
The job I’d really like to do in the future is working as a data analyst, ideally for a company involved in transport or city planning. The main reason is that I’ve always enjoyed finding patterns in numbers, and in my last year at school I did a small project on traffic in Tashkent, which I found fascinating.
As for the skills, I’d say the technical side is only half of it. Of course, you need statistics and a tool like Python or Excel, but what people often forget is that you also have to explain your results to managers who aren’t experts. For instance, a brilliant analysis is useless if nobody understands the chart. So communication, and honestly English, are just as important, since most documentation and online courses are in English.
When it comes to why so many young people here want to work in IT, I think there are two main reasons. The first is money: salaries in IT are considerably higher than in most other fields, and you can work for foreign companies without leaving the country. The second is flexibility, because many IT jobs can be done remotely. Having said that, I don’t think everyone who chooses IT really enjoys it. Some people simply follow the trend and then realise it’s not for them, which is why it’s worth trying a short course before committing to a four-year degree.
I like big cities. Because there are jobs. I like big cities because…
- For example, like…
- According to me. In my view ёки Personally.
- It is depend on. Тўғриси It depends on.
- All people / everybody / never. Most people, many young people, rarely
For example, it is very useful.
Бўш жойларга мос иборани қўйинг: since, as long as, Admittedly, which means, For instance, On balance, Having said that, Take.
- 1 ___ most jobs now require English, it’s worth starting early.
- 2 Remote work saves time. ___, it can feel lonely.
- 3 Salaries in IT are high, ___ many graduates choose it.
- 4 ___ my sister as an example: she learned to code at thirty.
- 5 ___, city life is expensive, but the opportunities are worth it.
- 6 Phones in class are fine ___ they are used for learning.
- 7 Public transport has improved. ___, the new metro lines have cut travel times.
- 8 ___, I think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.
- a I like online learning.
- b Sport is important for children.
- c Tourism is good for Uzbekistan.
1: 1 — Since; 2 — Having said that; 3 — which means; 4 — Take; 5 — Admittedly; 6 — as long as; 7 — For instance; 8 — On balance.
- a I’m a big fan of online learning, mainly because it saves me two hours of travelling a day. For instance, last year I did a data course from home while working part-time. Admittedly, it’s harder to stay motivated without a teacher in the room, so I always set myself weekly deadlines.
- b I’m fairly convinced that sport is essential for children, since it teaches them discipline as well as keeping them healthy. Take my nephew as an example: football practice three times a week has made him much more organised with homework. That’s not to say every child should be pushed into competitions, though.
- c On the whole, tourism is good for the country, because it creates jobs for people outside Tashkent too. A good example of this is Khiva, where many families now run guesthouses. Having said that, too many visitors can damage old buildings, so the numbers need to be managed.
