CEFR Speaking

I live in Yunusabad, on a quiet street near a small park. Most of the buildings are four-storey apartment blocks, and there’s a bakery on the corner where I buy bread every morning. What I like most is that it’s close to the metro, so I can get to the city centre in twenty minutes.

Both pictures show young people studying, but in very different places. In the first one, several students are sitting at long tables in what looks like a university library. It’s quiet, and they’re using printed books and notebooks. In the second picture, a young woman is working on a laptop in a busy café, with headphones on and a cup of coffee next to her. So the main difference is the atmosphere: the library seems calm and serious, whereas the café is more relaxed but probably noisier. I’d guess she likes some background noise when she works.

(I’d guess…).

I think some people find a library too silent, and it actually makes them sleepy. A café has a bit of energy, and you can order a drink, so studying feels less like hard work. Also, for people who work online, a café is a cheap way to leave the house without renting an office.

The first time I really had to speak in front of a group was in my second year at university. I presented our group project on water use in Uzbekistan to about forty students and two teachers. I’d done most of the research, so the others decided I should present it, which I wasn’t happy about.

To prepare, I wrote the key points on five small cards instead of a full script, and I practised in front of my younger sister three times. She kept telling me to slow down, which turned out to be the most useful advice. On the day, the first minute was terrible and my voice was shaking, but once I got to the charts, which I understood well, I relaxed. In the end the teacher said it was one of the clearest presentations, although I went over the time limit.

As for why people find it stressful, I think there are two main reasons. First, we’re afraid of being judged, and in a small group a mistake can be remembered for a long time. Second, most of us simply don’t get enough practice. At school we mostly answer the teacher’s questions rather than present our own ideas, so standing in front of people feels unnatural. The good news is that it gets easier with every attempt.

Whether phones should be banned in schools is a hot topic, because almost every pupil now has a smartphone.

On the one hand, there are strong arguments for a ban. The most obvious is concentration: even a single notification can pull a pupil’s attention away from the lesson. A ban would also change what happens during breaks. Instead of scrolling in silence, children would have to talk and play with each other, which matters for their social skills.

On the other hand, a complete ban has real drawbacks. Many parents, especially those who work long hours, want to be able to reach their children if something goes wrong. Also, a phone isn’t only a distraction: used properly, it’s a dictionary, a calculator and a way to practise languages.

Weighing these points, I think the concentration argument is the strongest, but it doesn’t require a total ban. A sensible compromise would be for pupils to hand in their phones at the start of each lesson and get them back at break time. That way, schools protect learning time without cutting children off from their families.

Pupils concentrate better → a single notification can pull a pupil’s attention away.

Part 1.1:

  • 1 Tell me about your favourite season.
  • 2 Who do you usually spend your weekends with?
  • 3 What did you want to be when you were a child?

Part 1.2.

  • 4 What do you see in these pictures? (45 сония)
  • 5 What are the advantages of small local shops? (30 сония)
  • 6 Why are shopping centres so popular with young people?

Part 2.

  • 7 Tell me about a trip that you remember well. What did you do there? Why do people enjoy travelling to new places?

Part 3. Every university student should do an internship before graduating.

  • a Students learn how a real workplace operates.
  • b Many small companies cannot afford to train interns properly.
  • c An internship can lead to a job offer.
  • d Unpaid internships are unfair to students from poorer families.
  • e Students discover whether they actually like their chosen field.
  • f It takes time away from final-year studies and exams.
  • g Employers value practical experience on a CV.
  • h Some courses, like pure mathematics, have few relevant internships.

F — a, c, e, g; A — b, d, f, h.

Масалан, c → a good internship sometimes turns into a full-time position.

  • There is… there is… there is… 4-саволда расмдаги ҳар бир буюмни санаш. Биттадан ортиқ there is дан қочинг, фарқни whereas, while билан айтинг.
In the picture…
  • Firstly, secondly, thirdly, fourthly. The most obvious… Also… On the other hand…
  • I agree with this opinion. Part 3
In my opinion, I think… (иккаласи бир маъно), more better, discuss about. Тўғриси: I think…, better, discuss (предлогсиз).
