Мебель по-английски — furniture, и это слово неисчисляемое: a lot of furniture, a piece of furniture, но никогда furnitures. Главные предметы: sofa, armchair, table, chair, bed, wardrobe, shelf, carpet, fridge, cooker. Квартиру описывают через there is / there are: There’s a sofa in the living room. There are two beds in the bedroom.

Shelf во множественном числе меняет букву: one shelf, two shelves, как knife — knives.

Самая частая путаница — hall. Фраза We have guests in the hall по-английски значит, что гости стоят в прихожей. Если они сидят за дастарханом в большой комнате, это living room или sitting room.
Двухкомнатная квартира — не two-bedroom flat
Русские и английские объявления считают комнаты по-разному. В русском считают все жилые комнаты, в английском — только спальни.
- «однушка» — a studio (если кухня в той же комнате) или a one-bedroom flat с отдельной кухней
- «двушка»: гостиная и спальня — a one-bedroom flat
- «трёшка»: гостиная и две спальни — a two-bedroom flat
Второе различие — этажи. В Британии первый этаж называется the ground floor, а the first floor — это наш второй. В США first floor совпадает с русским первым. Порядковые числительные для этажей и квартир собраны в статье числа на английском.
И ещё: flat — британское слово, apartment — американское. Жилой дом с квартирами — a block of flats или an apartment building, а новостройка — a new-build.
Описание квартиры: образец
I live in a two-bedroom flat on the fourth floor of a new-build in Yunusabad. When you come in, there’s a small hall with a mirror and a shoe rack. The living room is on the left. There’s a big grey sofa, a coffee table and a TV on the wall. My bedroom is small: there’s a bed, a wardrobe and a desk by the window. The kitchen is my favourite place because there’s a balcony with a view of the mountains.
